The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) hospital readmission reduction program (HRRP) incentivizes facilities to avoid additional patient hospitalizations by reducing reimbursements for hospitals with excessive preventable readmissions.

The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City has the lowest readmission score at 10.1%, followed by St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, with an 11.5% readmission rate.
There are 25 hospitals that have hospital-wide readmission rate scores at 12.7% or lower. These hospitals are dispersed across 17 states. The states of Kansas, Utah, and Washington each have three hospitals on the list.
The average readmission rate for the hospitals on the list is 12.29%, compared to the national average readmission rate of 14.56%.

- Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Total hip arthroplasty and/or total knee arthroplasty
