Top hospitals in New York City by net patient revenue

Home to over 8 million people, NYC is by and far the most populous city in the United States, with its population doubling the next most populous city. With landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Times Square, The Big Apple also has roughly 267 hospitals and 43 integrated delivery networks (IDNs), according to Definitive Healthcare data.

Using HospitalView, we’ve compiled a list of the top 20 hospitals in NYC and the surrounding area based on a standard metric of a healthcare organization’s financial performance, net patient revenue (NPR). NPR is the amount of money a hospital generates from patient services through commercial insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare.

What NYC hospitals have the highest net patient revenue?

The NYC hospital with the highest net patient revenue is New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, with an NPR of $7.6 billion. It is a part of the New York-Presbyterian IDN, which is the second-highest performing healthcare system in NYC and brings in an NPR of $10.2 billion. The Weill Cornett Medical Center offers services in the following specialties: digestive diseases, cancer, heart, orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, rehabilitation medicine, organ transplantation, vascular, psychiatry and behavioral health, and women’s health.

New York-Presbyterian is Magnet recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for excellence in nursing. It is ranked as the #1 hospital in New York for adult and pediatric care and the #5 hospital in the Mid-Atlantic for children. New York-Presbyterian has also made the honor roll for best hospitals across the U.S. and is nationally ranked in 14 adult specialties and 10 children’s—cardiology, heart, and vascular surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; psychiatry; rheumatology; urology; and pediatric diabetes and endocrinology are all within the top 10.

Tisch Hospital has the second-highest NPR in NYC, with an NPR of $7.2 billion. This hospital has also achieved Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and it has been awarded this distinction four consecutive times. The Joint Commission also recognizes Tisch Hospital’s excellence in palliative, perinatal, ventricular assist device, and stroke care. U.S. News & World Report has ranked them in the top 10, nationally, for 10 specialties.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has the third-highest net patient revenue in NYC, with an NPR of $4.3 billion. This hospital focuses solely on cancer care and partners with the Sloan Kettering Institute, a research hub. For over 30 years, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has been recognized as one of the top two cancer hospitals in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report.

The top IDN in New York City, Northwell Health, has no NYC hospitals within its network in the top three. However, this IDN has an NPR of $10.9 billion, brought in by a medical campus spanning 48 acres. Some of the major facilities included are the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Zucker Hillside Hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, and Katz Women’s Hospital. With over 5,000 staffed beds, this hospital system is also the largest in NYC.
