Top 25 hospitals by dietary expenses
Meals and nutrition are an important part of a hospital patient’s recovery. Hospital dietary expenses include the costs of preparing meals for patients and the metric is used to target and segment facilities across the country.
Using data from the Definitive Healthcare HospitalView product, we put together a list of the top 25 U.S. hospitals by dietary expenses. Data is sourced from the Medicare Cost Report and aggregated from the most recent 12-month interval tracked in our database.

Which hospitals have the highest dietary expenses?
NewYork/Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center ranks first for the highest hospital dietary expenses at $68.1 million. The hospital has the highest hospital operating expenses among U.S. hospitals and is a top hospital in New York.
UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights is next on the list, with dietary expenses of $35.2 million. The hospital is a top public hospital in the country and one of the top hospitals in California. In third is Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, another top public hospital and the second-largest hospital in North Carolina by net patient revenue.
Five of the 25 hospitals on the list are located in New York and another three are in California.
How much do hospitals spend on food preparation for patients?
Based on data from more than 4,200 hospitals in HospitalView, average hospital dietary expenses are about $2.4 million. In comparison, hospitals on the top 25 list have average dietary and food preparation expenses of $28.6 million.
