What is the biggest hospital in California by staffed beds?
The hospital with the most staffed beds in California is Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. This facility has 908 staffed beds and discharged more than 50,000 patients in 2023.
In second place is UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights. This facility has 834 staffed beds and more than 35,000 discharges.
DSH Metropolitan comes in third place with 826 staffed beds. Despite coming in third however, we tracked only 1,085 discharges for this facility in 2023. This low number of discharges may be because DSH Metropolitan is a psychiatric hospital, designed to treat patients with severe mental health conditions. This facility typically serves patients who may be unable to perform activities of daily living such as feeding, clothing, or sheltering themselves. DSH Metropolitan also treats people with mental health disorders who have been charged with a crime and are unable to defend themselves in a rational manner or understand court proceedings. Because of this, patients are very rarely discharged from the facility.
What does a staffed bed mean?
In the healthcare industry, a staffed bed refers to a hospital bed that is fully equipped and available for patient use, with sufficient healthcare personnel assigned to provide care for the patient occupying that bed. This term is distinct from licensed beds, which are the maximum number of beds a hospital is authorized to operate, as not all licensed beds may be staffed due to resource constraints.
For businesses and organizations targeting hospitals and health systems, staffed beds can be an important metric for everything from market segmentation and strategic planning.
The number of staffed beds a facility has is generally a strong indicator of the hospital’s actual capacity to admit and care for patients. This can translate to opportunity value, as hospitals with more staffed beds may have a greater need for certain products and services than other facilities. Medical and facility supply vendors may find staffed beds a particularly valuable metric to monitor as it can help them forecast potential order volumes and recurring sales.
