Largest IDNs in West Virginia
There are 73 healthcare facilities and hospitals in West Virginia, many of which are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN).
Also known as health systems, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities. IDNs may incorporate a variety of facility types, but hospitals are usually the largest and highest-earning. As such, targeting IDNs with multiple hospitals can enable your product or service to reach more facilities and help more patients.
If you’re selling to hospitals, be sure to consider net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a facility or health system receives from its patient services. The larger an IDN’s NPR, the more likely it is to be positioned to expand its facilities and healthcare offerings.
With help from HospitalView and using data from the Medicare Cost Report, we’ve listed the largest IDNs in West Virginia based on the number of affiliated hospitals and the most financially successful IDNs in WV based on NPR.

What West Virginia IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?
The West Virginia health system with the most hospitals is WVU Medicine, with 23 hospitals. Its hospital network includes a range of community hospitals, medical centers, orthopedic hospitals, and children’s hospitals. It also consists of five institutes that service critical care and trauma, cancer, eye, heart and vascular, and neuroscience.
The WV health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is Vandalia Health, with 15 hospitals. This IDN is a combination of three IDNs—CAMC Health System, Mon Health System, and Davis Health—bringing the expertise and reach of each into one cohesive network. They deliver care to small rural communities in West Virginia as well as Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Ohio.
Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Health System has the third-highest number of hospitals, with seven affiliated hospitals. Its flagship hospital, CAMC, is home to the largest Cancer Center in West Virginia, WV’s first kidney transplant center, and the first freestanding Women and Children’s hospital.
The IDNs in West Virginia may not have as many hospitals in their network as some of the top IDNs in the country, but it’s still worth knowing their relative sizes and capacities. The more hospitals in an IDN’s network, the more facilities, healthcare professionals, and patients could potentially benefit from your product or service.

What West Virginia IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?
The health system in West Virginia with the highest net patient revenue is WVU Medicine, with an NPR of $4.6 billion.
The IDN with the second highest NPR in West Virginia is Vandalia Health, with an NPR of $2 billion.
Finally, Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Health System has the third-highest NPR in West Virginia, with an NPR of $1.4 billion.
Of note, all three of these IDNs are also on the list of top three IDNs in West Virginia based on the number of hospitals, and in the same positions. This is not unusual—the more hospitals an IDN has, the more staffed beds they typically have, which allows them to treat more patients. Consequently, more patients usually generate more revenue.
However, there’s more to learn about an IDN than just its financial performance. For instance, while hospital number and NPR may place these IDNs in the same three spots, looking at other factors, such as prescription patterns, referrals, or integration levels, may highlight key differences that can be used in your marketing strategies.
