What Washington IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Washington with the highest net patient revenue is Providence St. Joseph Health, with an NPR of $17.6 billion, which makes it one of the highest-performing IDNs in the U.S. based on NPR. This NPR, which far exceeds that of any other IDN in Washington, is understandable given the size of the Providence IDN—more available beds equals more patients seen, which equals greater revenues.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Washington is UW Medicine, with an NPR of $4.3 billion. Impressively, this IDN has this high of an NPR despite having only four hospitals in its network. It is partnered with the University of Washington School of Medicine and is one of the largest and most comprehensive medical research programs in the world.

Providence Swedish IDN has the third-highest net patient revenue in Washington, with an NPR that is just shy of $4 billion. This IDN is a part of the parent IDN Providence St. Joseph Health, which is the largest IDN in Washington based on both size and NPR. Three of the Providence Swedish hospitals have been named as some of the best regional hospitals for the Seattle Metro and Olympic Peninsula areas.

Targeting IDNs in Washington

For anyone looking to sell into the healthcare industry in Washington, understanding the broader health system landscape is essential for making strategic decisions.

While net patient revenue, or the amount of money that a hospital receives from patient services, is a key metric for the financial strength of these IDNs, other factors can also help if you’re looking to create more targeted and effective sales conversations. For example, integration level, affiliations, prescription patterns, relationships, and referrals can all provide valuable information about an IDN.

If you’re bringing your product or service to market, knowing which Washington IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you line up sales territories or make key investment decisions. Furthermore, knowing the connections between IDNs, such as which IDNs are a part of the same parent IDN, can further aid your commercialization strategy.
