Largest IDNs in Iowa

When ranking the states by their populations, Iowa is the 31st most populous state. Definitive Healthcare data tracks 132 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Iowa, many of them members of an integrated delivery network (IDN).

Also known as health systems, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities. While hospitals are just one type of facility that may operated by an IDN, they are often the largest and highest-earning. As such, targeting IDNs with multiple hospitals could help your product or service reach more facilities and support more patients.

Another metric to consider is net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. The higher an IDN’s NPR, the greater its financial success and the more likely it is to have the resources to expand its facilities and healthcare offerings.

With help from HospitalView and using data from the Medicare Cost Report, we created two lists: one ranking Iowa IDNs by their number of affiliated hospitals and another by their NPR.

What Iowa IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Iowa with the highest net patient revenue is UnityPoint Health, with an NPR of $3.5 billion. They also have the highest number of patient discharges, which typically indicates higher patient volumes and thus higher revenue intake.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Iowa is MercyOne, with an NPR of $2.4 billion. Its parent IDN, Trinity Health, is also among the highest-earning IDNs in the U.S. based on its NPR.

University of Iowa Health Care has the third-highest net patient revenue in Iowa, with an NPR of $2.3 billion.

While NPR is a key indicator of an IDN’s financial strength, other metrics and classifications can provide more insight into how an IDN operates. For example, the two highest-earning IDNs in Iowa are classified under system IV integration level, which indicates they employ organizational strategies in their internal structures to align information systems, purchasing, and distribution across all their facilities. Details like these shed light on the types of services and products an IDN or facility is likely to prioritize.

The benefits of targeting IDNs in Iowa

Selling into the healthcare space is challenging, especially when you’re looking to sell to the same high-value IDNs your competition is already likely targeting. Understanding a provider’s unique operational model, clinical focus, and financial performance allows you to personalize your marketing strategy and increase your odds of success.

Before you assign priority to your list of potential targets, you should determine how each provider fits into the broader health system landscape. Whether you’re bringing a product or service to market, knowing which Iowa IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you target more effectively.
