Largest IDNs in Indiana
When ranking states by population, Indiana is the 17th largest. Definitive Healthcare data tracks 206 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Indiana, many of which are part of an integrated delivery network (IDN) or health system.
When it comes to targeting healthcare facilities, knowing which IDNs in Indiana are the largest and most financially strong could allow for greater distribution of your product or service among the IDN’s network, which may include hospitals, surgical centers, clinics, and imaging centers. Ultimately, the larger the network an IDN has, the more facilities at which your product or service can be distributed.
We created two lists using HospitalView: one of the largest IDNs in Indiana and another of the highest-earning. The data used to make these lists comes from the Medicare Cost Report.

What Indiana IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?
The Indiana health system with the most hospitals is St. Vincent Health, with 20 hospitals. Its flagship hospital, Ascension St. Vincent Hospital – Indianapolis, offers a comprehensive stroke center, Level I trauma center, and a transplant center. St. Vincent Health is a part of the IDN Ascension Health, which is one of the top 10 largest IDNs in the U.S. based on its number of affiliated hospitals.
The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is Indiana University Health (IU Health), with 18 hospitals. Despite having the second-highest number of hospitals, it constitutes the largest network of physicians in Indiana and are partnered with the Indiana University School of Medicine.
Deaconess Health System has the third-highest number of hospitals, with 16 affiliated hospitals. It provides healthcare services for those in southwestern Indiana, southeastern Illinois, and western Kentucky.
While hospitals are just one facility that an IDN may have in its network, they are often the largest and highest-earning. Thus, knowing which IDNs have the most hospitals in Indiana can help to identify the health systems that have a greater need for healthcare products and services.

What Indiana IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?
The IDN in Indiana with the highest NPR is IU Health, with an NPR of $6 billion.
The IDN with the second highest NPR in Indiana is St. Vincent Health, with an NPR of $3.2 billion. Its parent IDN, Ascension, also makes the list of highest-earning IDNs in the U.S.
Franciscan Alliance Inc. (Franciscan Health) has the third-highest NPR in Indiana, with an NPR of $2.7 billion.
While net patient revenue is a key indicator of the financial strength of these IDNs, other qualities can help you gain even more insight into an IDN. For example, the highest-earning IDN in Indiana is classified as system IV integration level, which means they use strategy and organization in their internal structures to align information systems, purchasing, and distribution across all their facilities. In comparison, the second and third highest-earning IDNs are a system III integration level, which means they provide cradle-to-grave services.
