Largest IDNs in Illinois

Illinois is the 6th largest state in the U.S. by population. Its 12.5 million residents rely on 258 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

Also known as an integrated health system, IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, physician groups, imaging centers, or ambulatory surgery centers. Some IDNs have larger networks than others, and targeting these large IDNs allows for your product or service to reach more facilities and have a greater impact on the healthcare industry.

Yet another metric of an IDN’s success is its net patient revenue (NPR), which is the amount of money a health system receives from its patient services. A larger NPR can indicate an IDN’s financial success and capacity to expand its facilities and services. However, factors like operational efficiency, payor mix, service mix, and more also play crucial roles in overall financial health.

With help from Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we created two lists: one of the largest IDNs in Illinois based on the number of affiliated hospitals and another of the most financially successful IDNs in IL based on NPR.

What Illinois IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Illinois health system with the most hospitals is CommonSpirit Health, with 157 hospitals. It is the #2 IDN for all US IDNs when ranking based on number of affiliated hospitals and the number of patient discharges. This data shows that the CommonSpirit Health IDN, thanks to its large network of hospitals, treats more patients than nearly any other IDN in the United States.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is OSF HealthCare, with 17 hospitals. This hospital network includes acute care hospitals, crucial access hospitals, and a transitional care center. It also operates OSF Home Care Services, which is a network of hospice and home health services.

Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) health system has the third-highest number of hospitals, with 15 affiliated hospitals.

The more hospitals an IDN has in its network, the greater potential impact that can be seen if you partner with them since more hospitals lead to more places where your product or service can be distributed and implemented.

What Illinois IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Illinois with the highest net patient revenue is CommonSpirit Health, with an NPR of $30.6 billion. This NPR makes CommonSpirit Health the second-highest earning IDN of all United States IDNs.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Illinois is Northwestern Medicine, with an NPR of $6.1 billion. Its flagship hospital, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, was placed by U.S. News & World Report on the honor roll of best hospitals in the U.S.

Finally, there’s Advocate Health Care, which has the third-highest NPR in Illinois at $5.4 billion. It is a part of the parent IDN Advocate Health, which is one of the top-earning IDNs in the U.S.

Net patient revenue (NPR) is the amount of money an IDN makes for its patient services. A greater NPR might indicate a stronger financial state. However, for those looking to target their marketing strategies, it’s important to consider more than an IDN’s NPR, with other key metrics being prescription patterns, referrals, and relationships.

Targeting IDNs in Illinois

It can be challenging to sell into the healthcare space, and even more so when you’re looking to target IDNs since each has a unique model. Understanding Illinois’ broader health system landscape is essential for aiding your strategic decisions.

Hospitals are no longer the primary focus of care providers and patients; instead, IDNs are gradually assuming responsibility for all aspects of patient care, making them a valuable target for suppliers. Whether you’re looking to sell a product or service, marketing to IDNs allows you to take advantage of their wide range of care facilities, especially if you market to IDNs with large networks.
