Illinois is the 6th most populous state in the nation, with more than 12 million residents living within its borders. Most Illinois residents are concentrated in the northeast part of the state, which is why most of the largest healthcare facilities are located in the Chicago metro area.

Which Illinois hospitals have the highest net patient revenue?
Collectively, the top 20 Illinois hospitals have an NPR of over $26 billion, and the top three performing hospitals all come from Chicago.
The Illinois hospital with the most NPR in 2024 is UChicago Medicine Mitchell Hospital, which is a part of the UChicago Medicine integrated delivery network. The facility reported an NPR of more than $2.4 billion.
In second place is Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a net patient revenue of $2.3 billion. This Chicago-based facility is an academic medical center (AMC) and a teaching hospital. The hospital has been nationally recognized numerous times for its quality of care.
Rush University Medical Center follows closely behind in third place with a reported NPR of $2,304,152,320. The facility has been in operation for more than 180 years and is also an academic medical center and teaching hospital associated with Rush University. It is the flagship hospital for the Rush University System for Health.
Where are the largest hospitals by net patient revenue located?
With more than 9 million residents, the Chicago metro area is by far the most populated area of the state. More than half of the state’s entire population lives in and around Chicago. Because of this, the majority of the largest hospitals by net patient revenue are also located in the city.
While there are some large hospitals in cities like Springfield and Evanston, seven of the top 20 hospitals on this list are located in Chicago. The highest-ranking facility outside this metro area is Evanston Hospital, which ranks at number four.
