Collectively, the top 20 Illinois hospitals have an NPR of over $22 billion. The highest ranked is Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a net patient revenue of $2,224,223,352. This Chicago-based facility is an academic medical center (AMC) and teaching hospital, and is also the largest hospital in the state by the number of staffed beds. The hospital has been nationally recognized numerous times for its quality of care. In 2022, U.S. News and World Report named Northwestern Memorial as the 9th best hospital in the nation and the best in the Chicago metro area.
The hospital with the second highest NPR is Rush University Medical Center, also based in Chicago. Its net patient revenue is $1,992,372,740 and has been in operation for more than 180 years. Rush University Medical Center is an AMC and teaching hospital associated with Rush University, and it’s known for its 70 highly competitive residency and fellowship programs in numerous medical and surgical specialties. It is the flagship hospital for the Rush University System for Health.
In third place is UChicago Medicine Mitchell Hospital, which is a part of the UChicago Medicine integrated delivery network. Another Chicago-based facility, UChicago Mitchell Hospital comes in just behind Rush University Medical Center, with an NPR of $1,992,346,000. Like Rush University Medical Center, UChicago Mitchell Hospital is also an AMC and teaching hospital associated with the University of Chicago.

With more than 9 million residents, the Chicago metro area is by far the most populated area of the state. More than half of the state’s entire population lives in and around Chicago. Because of this, the majority of the largest hospitals by net patient revenue are also located in the city.
While there are some large hospitals in cities like Springfield and Evanston, 15 of the top 20 hospitals on this list are located in Chicago. The highest-ranking facility outside this metro area is Evanston Hospital, which ranks at number four.
