What is knee replacement surgery?

Knee replacement is a surgical procedure that involves the use of metal and plastic components to cover the damaged parts of the knee joint, including the kneecap. This surgery is typically recommended for individuals who have severe arthritis or a significant knee injury that cannot be treated through other means. The knee joint can be affected by various forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, which causes the breakdown of joint cartilage and adjacent bone, rheumatoid arthritis, which leads to inflammation and excessive fluid, and traumatic arthritis caused by injury.

The primary goal of knee replacement surgery is to alleviate knee pain and disability that cannot be managed with other treatments by resurfacing the damaged parts of the knee joint.

What are the types of knee replacements?

Generally speaking, when a patient is in need of knee replacement surgery, the specific procedure chosen will be based on the extent of knee damage. Other characteristics, such as the patient’s age, activity level, and overall health may also be considered. The main types of knee replacement surgeries include:

  1. Total knee replacement (CPT code 27447), which is a replacement of the entire knee joint, femur, and shinbone with artificial components.
  2. Partial knee replacement (CPT code 27446), which replaces only the damaged compartment of the knee and is a less invasive procedure.
  3. Kneecap (patellofemoral) replacement (CPT code 27428), which replaces only the kneecap and the groove in the femur where the kneecap rests.
  4. Bilaterial knee replacement (CPT code 27447-50), which is a surgical procedure that involves replacing both knees, either in one or two separate procedures.
  5. Revision knee replacement (CPT code 27486 or 27487), which is a complex procedure that replaces a previously implanted knee prosthesis due to fracture, infection, wear, or other reasons.

Our list analyzes only total knee replacement procedures.
