Top 20 physician groups for type 2 diabetes visits
More than 1 million Americans are newly diagnosed with diabetes each year and nearly 100 million American adults are estimated to have prediabetes. Both primary care providers and specialists such as endocrinologists treat patients with this chronic condition.
Using data from the Definitive Healthcare ClaimsMx and PhysicianGroupView products, we reviewed the physician groups that had the most encounters for patients with diabetes between January 2022 and September 2022. We filtered physician group medical claims by ICD-10 codes that begin with E11, which includes 100 type 2 diabetes mellitus codes.

Which physician group has the most diabetes patient visits?
Texas Health Physicians Group, based in Arlington, Texas, had the most encounters for patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also one of the largest physician groups in the country based on Medicare charges. Hemet Community Medical Group in Hemet, California, and Northeast Florida Endocrine and Diabetes Associates in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, complete the top three physician groups on the list.
Three of the physician groups by type 2 diabetes patient encounters are located in Ohio. Two of the top 10 hospitals by diabetes visits are also in Ohio – Cleveland Clinic and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.
What is the main cause of diabetes?
The cause of diabetes varies by type, however, the exact reasons for the condition are unknown. All of the types of diabetes can lead to excess sugar in the blood that can contribute to additional health problems.
- Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells in the patient’s pancreas.
- Type 2 diabetes involves cells that become resistant to insulin or results when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin.
