Remote patient monitoring volume by state

What is remote patient monitoring?

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) helps patients with chronic health conditions and their providers record and track the patient’s information on an ongoing basis. RPM systems capture changes in the patient’s physiological signs and can indicate the need for caregiver intervention.

How many patients are using remote patient monitoring?

According to data from our Atlas All-Payor Claims dataset, there were nearly 2 million RPM-related patients in 2023. Our analysis measured distinct patient counts in each state and only considered CPT codes that directly applied to remote patient monitoring.

Below, we compiled a list of states in the U.S. ranked by the number of remote patient monitoring patients in 2023.

Fig. 1 Data from the Definitive Healthcare Atlas All-Payor Claims dataset. Medical claims data is sourced from multiple medical claims clearinghouses in the United States and updated monthly. Data accurate as of November 2024.

Which states have the most RPM patients?

California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Michigan had the most patients with RPM procedure claims in 2023. Procedure claims for the top four states on our list are all relatively close together, likely because they are also the four most populous states in the U.S.

Which states have the least RPM patients?

Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Vermont, and Alaska had the least patients with RPM procedure claims. These states, along with Washington D.C., are also among the least populated areas in the U.S., so it makes sense that there would be fewer RPM claims.
