Largest IDNs in Utah

Utah is the 21st smallest state in the U.S. by population. Its 3.4 million residents rely on 69 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN) or health system.

Having a greater understanding of the IDNs in Utah can prove invaluable for your healthcare commercialization strategy. While there are many key metrics concerning IDNs, two key ones include their size (based on their number of affiliated hospitals) and financial strength (based on their net patient revenue). Targeting large health systems allows for greater distribution of a product or service, and IDNs with high NPRs may be looking to upgrade or expand their services.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we ranked the IDNs in Utah based on their number of affiliated hospitals to determine which IDNs were the largest.

What Utah IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Utah with the highest net patient revenue is Intermountain Health, with an NPR of $9 billion. This IDN is one of the largest IDNs in the United States based on net patient revenue, and it is the largest nonprofit health system in the Intermountain West. It offers care throughout Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Nevada.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Utah is the University of Utah Health, with an NPR of $2.7 billion. It also has a highly ranked $458 million research enterprise.

HCA Mountain Division – MountainStar Healthcare IDN has the third-highest NPR in Utah at $1.3 billion. Despite having more hospital beds than the second-place IDN, HCA Mountain Division has fewer discharges, which suggests that it has more staffed beds sitting unused than the University of Utah Health. However, HCA Healthcare, as a whole, is one of the highest-earning IDNs in the US.

Net patient revenue is the total amount of money generated from patient services after any deductions, including discounts and allowances, are removed. It is a common metric of an IDN’s financial strength because it shows which facilities have more cash coming in. From a marketing standpoint, NPR can indicate which IDNs have the means to expand their services or update their technology.
