The New York health system with the most hospitals is the New York State Office of Mental Health, with 24 hospitals. Despite having the greatest number of hospitals, the New York State Office of Mental Health has a considerably lower number of discharges, with the number of discharges nearly identical to the number of staffed beds. This is likely because the New York State Office of Mental Health primarily has psychiatric centers within its IDN, which are often long-term stay facilities.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is Northwell Health, also known as North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, with 20 hospitals. Despite having four fewer hospitals, the Northwell Health IDN has over 1,400 more staffed beds than the top IDN for New York and the most staffed beds of all New York IDNs.

VA New York/New Jersey VA Health Care Network – VISN 2 has the third-highest number of hospitals with 15 affiliated hospitals. This IDN is a part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is one of the largest IDNs in the U.S. based on the number of hospitals. While this healthcare network spans New York and New Jersey, a majority of the hospitals (12 out of the 15 total) reside in New York.
