Largest IDNs in Kansas

Kansas is the 17th smallest state in the U.S. by population. Its nearly 3 million residents rely on 164 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN), or health system.

Those looking to create a healthcare commercialization strategy can find value in first analyzing the IDNs of Kansas. For example, IDNs with more affiliated healthcare facilities offer the opportunity for greater distribution of a product or service, which can make them advantageous targets. Net patient revenue (NPR) is another helpful metric for analyzing health systems, as it identifies which IDNs have the cash reserves to expand or upgrade their facilities or services.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we ranked the IDNs in Kansas based on their number of affiliated hospitals and NPR to determine which IDNs were the largest and highest-earning.

What Kansas IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Kansas with the highest net patient revenue is The University of Kansas Health System, with an NPR of $2.9 billion.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Kansas is HCA Midwest Health, with an NPR of $2.1 billion. While this IDN does not have the largest NPR in Kansas, they do have the greatest number of staffed beds and discharges. Additionally, their parent IDN, HCA Healthcare, is the highest-earning IDN in the U.S.

Ascension Via Christi Health has the next-highest NPR in Kansas with an NPR of $990,000, and their parent IDN, Ascension Health, is a top earner when comparing all U.S. IDNs.

Of note, all of these IDNs are classified at the System III integration level. This integration level, also known as vertical integration, means that the IDNs provide cradle-to-grave healthcare services. Their health systems each contain a wide range of care facilities that span prenatal care to assisted living facilities, and their goal is to share information and resources across their facilities. With a greater range of care services, these IDNs can care for more individuals, which can lead to greater revenues.

Targeting IDNs in Kansas

When bringing a service or medical device to market, knowing which Kansas IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help inform your healthcare commercialization strategy.

Furthermore, targeting these large and financially strong health systems can promote greater distribution of your product or service among their affiliated hospitals, clinics, and imaging centers, ultimately leading to a greater impact.

However, while NPR is one way to define an IDN’s financial strength, those looking to sell into a consolidating healthcare market should use other metrics, as well, such as referrals, integration level, and affiliations. The more data you have on a health system, the better your marketing strategies can be.
