Largest IDNs in Connecticut

Connecticut is the 29th largest state in the U.S. by population. There are 53 hospitals and healthcare facilities in Connecticut, according to Definitive Healthcare data. Many of these facilities are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN), or health system.

Value can be found in analyzing the health systems in Connecticut before curating a healthcare commercialization strategy. For example, IDNs with more affiliated healthcare facilities offer the opportunity for greater distribution of a product or service, which can make them an advantageous target for your sales or marketing team. Net patient revenue (NPR) is another helpful metric, as it emphasizes the IDNs with a higher likelihood of planning an expansion to their facilities or services because they have the cash reserves to do so.

Using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView, we ranked the IDNs in Connecticut based on their number of affiliated hospitals and NPR to determine which IDNs were the largest and highest-earning.

What Connecticut IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Connecticut health system with the most hospitals is Yale New Haven Health System, with 11 hospitals. It provides family-focused care in more than 100 medical specialties and has hospitals within its network that rank among the best hospitals in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. This health system is also named one of the most wired hospital systems in the country because of its technological advancements.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is Hartford HealthCare, with ten hospitals, some of which include teaching hospitals, community hospitals, trauma centers, and a regional home care system.

Nuvance Health has the third-highest number of hospitals, with seven affiliated hospitals that extend through Western Connecticut and New York’s Hudson Valley. In addition to these hospitals, this network also includes a research institute, which allows it to bring breakthroughs from the lab to its patients.

Of note, all of these IDNs are classified as a System III integration level. This integration level, also known as vertical integration, means that the IDNs provide cradle-to-grave healthcare services. Their health systems each contain a wide range of care facilities that span prenatal care to assisted living facilities, and their goal is to share information and resources across their facilities.
