Largest IDNs in Arkansas

Arkansas is the 18th smallest state in the U.S. by population. Arkansas has roughly 120 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs, sometimes referred to as health systems, are networks of one or more healthcare facilities that can include hospitals, health clinics, imaging centers, physician groups, or ambulatory surgery centers. Knowing this, the larger an IDN you target, the greater the distribution you can see of your product or service.

Using the Definitive Healthcare HospitalView product, we ranked Arkansas's biggest and highest-earning IDNs based on the number of affiliated hospitals and net patient revenue (NPR). Data from these lists comes from the Medicare Cost Report.

What Arkansas IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Arkansas health system with the most hospitals is Baptist Health (AR), with 12 hospitals, according to the most recent 12-month interval in our database. It is Arkansas’ largest and most comprehensive non-profit healthcare organization. Baptist Health is continually expanding its facilities and community outreach, including a recent addition of a milk bank depot for women to donate milk, which is the first facility of its kind in Arkansas, and will allow milk to be sent to hospitals throughout Arkansas.

CHI St. Vincent, Northwest Health System, and Unity Health are all tied for second place with five hospitals each. CHI St. Vincent has served the Arkansas community since 1888 and has a network that includes primary care, urgent care, specialty clinics, home health, hospitals, surgery centers, and rehabilitation centers. It is a part of the CommonSpirit Health IDN, which is one of the top IDNs across the US when ranking based on their number of hospitals and number of discharges.

Northwest Health System features a specialty hospital and a Women’s hospital within their network, and Unity Health received the Silver Performance Achievement Award for Chest Pain from the American College of Cardiology, an award that only 82 hospitals across the US received.

What Arkansas IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Arkansas with the highest net patient revenue is Baptist Health (AR), with an NPR of $1.5 billion. It is the only IDN in Arkansas to surpass 1,500 staffed beds, which explains how it also has the highest number of discharges. The more patients a facility can see, the greater revenue it will bring in, which is what makes an IDN’s number of staffed beds and discharges valuable metrics.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Arkansas is the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Health (UAMS Health), with an NPR of $1 billion. Impressively, UAMS Health holds the second-place seat despite having only two hospitals, suggesting that its two hospitals individually earn more than the 12 hospitals that are part of the Baptist Health (AR) IDN.

Arkansas Children’s Hospital System has Arkansas’ third-highest NPR, with an NPR of $873 million. It is the only hospital system in Arkansas focused on providing children.

NPR is the amount of money an IDN makes for their patient services. As such, the greater the NPR, the greater an IDN’s financial strength. However, for companies looking to form partnerships or sell a solution, it’s—other key metrics include prescription patterns, affiliations, and integration levels.

The benefits of targeting Arkansas IDNs

Selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and even more so when IDNs are your target since each has a unique model. However, with today’s healthcare market placing more responsibility on IDNs, targeting them is even more important, and it is their uniqueness that allows you to personalize your sales technique and target only the IDNs that are the best fit for your company.

To narrow down potential IDNs into a fine-tuned list of targets, you must first understand the broader health system landscape. Whether you’re bringing your product or service to market, knowing which Arkansas IDNs have the most affiliated hospitals and the highest NPR can help you prioritize the best IDNs to target.
