Largest IDNs in Arizona

Arizona is the 14th largest state in the U.S. by population, and its 7.4 million residents rely on hospitals and healthcare facilities that are often part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN).

IDNs are networks of one or more healthcare facilities, including hospitals, health clinics, physician groups, imaging centers, or ambulatory surgery centers. IDNs can range in size and expanse, but the larger an IDN you target, the greater opportunity there is for your product or service to be implemented at more facilities.

Using the Definitive Healthcare HospitalView, we created two lists: one of the largest IDNs in Arizona based on the number of affiliated hospitals and another of the most financially successful IDNs based on net patient revenue.

What Arizona IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?

The Arizona health system with the most hospitals is Banner Health, with 35 hospitals. It also makes Definitive Healthcare’s list of U.S. IDNs with the most hospitals.

The health system with the second most affiliated hospitals is HonorHealth, which has seven hospitals. It is a nonprofit health system, and in addition to its hospitals, it has a cancer care network and offers community services.

Abrazo Health also has seven hospitals, and it is a part of the parent IDN Tenet Healthcare, which is one of the top IDNs in the United States based on its number of hospitals and number of staffed beds.

IDNs that have a lot of hospitals within their health system have large networks where a product or service can easily be distributed to numerous facilities. Knowing this, these large Arizona IDNs can be valuable targets for marking efforts.

What Arizona IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?

The IDN in Arizona with the highest net patient revenue is Banner Health, with an NPR of $10 billion. This IDN sees more than 200,000 discharges a year, and with each discharge equating to more revenue, it’s easy to see how it takes the top spot in Arizona based on NPR.

The IDN with the second highest NPR in Arizona is HonorHealth, with an NPR of $2.3 billion.

Finally, Phoenix Children’s Health System has the third-highest NPR in Arizona, with an NPR of $1.2 billion. Its flagship hospital, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, has been ranked as one of the best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report for the past 13 years.

How can NPR guide IDN targeting in Arizona?

Net patient revenue is the total amount of money generated from patient services, and it can be collected through Medicare, Medicaid, or insurance. It is a common metric of an IDN’s financial strength because it shows which facilities have more cash coming in, and from a marketing standpoint, NPR can identify the IDNs that have the means to expand their services or update their technology.

Even though NPR is a key indicator of an IDN’s financial strength, there are other metrics to consider for more targeted and effective sales efforts, such as prescription patterns, integration levels, affiliations, and referrals. As such, anyone who is looking to sell into the Arizona healthcare industry should understand its broad health system landscape to strategize and market in a way that converts leads to clients.
