Largest IDNs in Alaska
Despite being the largest state based on area, Alaska is the 3rd smallest state in the U.S. by population. There are 29 hospitals and healthcare facilities, many of which are part of a broader integrated delivery network (IDN), or health system.
Having a greater understanding of the IDNs in Alaska can prove invaluable for your healthcare commercialization strategy. While there are many metrics concerning IDNs, two key ones include: IDN size (based on their number of affiliated hospitals) and financial strength (based on their net patient revenue), and both provide crucial insights into an IDN. Targeting health systems with a large number of affiliated facilities allows for greater distribution of a product or service, and IDNs with high NPRs have the means to upgrade or expand their services.
With the help of Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView two lists: one of the largest IDNs in Alaska and another listing the IDNs with the highest NPR.

What Alaska IDN has the most affiliated hospitals?
There are two Alaskan health systems tied for the most hospitals: Providence Health & Services – Alaska and Alaska Area Native Health Service. They both have six hospitals included in their network and are both located in Anchorage.
Providence Health & Services is a part of the Providence St. Joseph Health IDN, which is one of the largest IDNs in the US based on its number of affiliated hospitals.
Alaska Area Native Health Service works with Alaska Native Tribes and Tribal Organizations to bring health services to Alaskan Natives; their Anchorage medical center is a state-wide referral center and provider of specialty care, and each of their hospitals is tribally operated.
There are then two health systems with the next-highest number of hospitals, two: North Star Behavioral Health and Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC).
While Alaskan IDNs do not have as many hospitals in their network as some of the top IDNs in the country, knowing which IDNs have the largest networks can indicate who is a wise target—the more hospitals in their network, the more facilities where your product or service can be distributed and utilized.

What Alaska IDN has the highest net patient revenue (NPR)?
The IDN in Alaska with the highest NPR is Providence Health & Services – Alaska, with an NPR of $888 million. Providence Alaska is a non-profit network of hospitals, care centers, skilled nursing facilities, home health services, and clinics located primarily in South Central Alaska, although the parent IDN has a presence in Montana, California, Washington, and Oregon, as well.
The IDN with the second highest NPR in Alaska is Foundation Health Partners, with an NPR of $288 million. The Banner Health IDN originally operated Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, but in 2017, Foundation Health Partners became the community owner and operator of the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, its sole hospital.
Alaska Area Native Health Service IDN has the third-highest NPR in Alaska, with an NPR of $213 million.
NPR is the amount of money an IDN makes for their patient services. As such, the greater an NPR, the greater an IDN’s financial strength. However, for those looking to target their marketing strategies, it’s important to consider more than NPR, with other key metrics being prescription patterns, integration levels, and relationships.
Targeting IDNs in Alaska
In today’s healthcare market, hospitals are no longer the primary focus of care providers and patients; instead, IDNs now cover all aspects of patient care, making them a valuable target for suppliers. Whether you’re looking to sell a product or service, marketing to IDNs allows you to take advantage of their wide range of care facilities, especially if you market to IDNs with larger networks.
However, selling into the healthcare space is complicated, and even more so when you’re looking to target IDNs. Each IDN follows a unique model, so a cookie-cutter marketing approach will not be as successful as tailoring your marketing to match the IDN; understanding Alaska’s broader health system landscape can help you as you make strategic decisions.
