Triple Aim
What is the Triple Aim?
The Triple Aim is a framework developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in 2007 to optimize health system performance. The Triple Aim’s three areas of focus are:
- Improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction
- Improving the health of populations
- Reducing the per capita cost of healthcare
Why is the Triple Aim important in healthcare?
The Triple Aim is important to healthcare organizations as it is critical to the success of various value-based care payment models. As the industry moves from fee-for-service to value-based care, focusing on the Triple Aim will drive improvements in delivering high-quality care while driving down overall healthcare costs.
The Triple Aim also pushes healthcare leaders to develop strategies to improve the health of communities outside of services taking place within the four walls of the hospital or clinic.
