Interactive response technology (IRT)

What is interactive response technology (IRT)?

IRT helps clinical trial sponsors and sites manage the logistics of participants and drug supply throughout the clinical trial. It may also be referred to as randomization and trial supply management.

Some of the tasks completed by IRT include:

  • Patient management. The IRT system manages the randomization of patients into treatment arms and ensures they receive the drug or placebo based on their sorting. It also helps with scheduling patient visits and maintaining blinding throughout the study.
  • Drug supply management. IRT allows clinical supply managers to call for supply shipments to the clinical trial site or manage automatic shipments. Once shipments arrive, IRT helps manage the clinical trial site’s inventory.
  • Reporting and analysis. By housing patient and drug supply data, IRT can be used to analyze the study’s effectiveness.

How does IRT improve clinical trials?

In addition to assisting in the management of clinical trials, IRT also organizes all its collected data, which can be used to optimize clinical trial conduct and aid inspections and audits. Overall, it offers a more organized clinical trial, which can produce a smoother discovery and authorization process.
