Electronic laboratory reporting (ELR)

What is electronic laboratory reporting (ELR)?

ELR is the transmission of digital laboratory reports, often from laboratories to local and state public health departments, the CDC, and health systems. Compared to mailing and faxing information, ELR offers more conclusive information and a speedier transmission.

ELR also assists with the process of filling in the report, which results in fewer needs for follow-ups for more information—all the necessary information is included the first time. Furthermore, with no manual data entry, there is a lower chance of error due to human transcription or the misinterpretation of information because of poor handwriting quality.

The ELR works in conjunction with a laboratory information system (LIS), which is a software-based system that supports laboratory workflow, electronic data exchange, and specimen and result tracking. The information in the LIS is used to create ELRs, which are sent to public health partners through electronic data systems.

What are the benefits of ELR?

On a grander scale, quickly delivered and high-quality ELR data allows for health outbreaks to be rapidly identified and managed effectively, which allows for more informed and effective response activities.

Additionally, ELR utilizes a standardized format, which further improves interoperability and allows for an easier exchange of information.
