Specialty Pharmacy
What is a specialty pharmacy?
Specialty pharmacies dispense high-cost and high-touch prescription drugs, which often require special handling. These types of medications include oral drugs, injectables and biologics that treat chronic or complex disease states such as cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS) and rare diseases. These pharmacies may treat one therapy area or a variety of therapy areas.
Why are specialty pharmacies important in healthcare?
Unlike a traditional commercial pharmacy, specialty pharmacies play a more active role in patient care. Specialty pharmacies provide patients with clinical and financial management services such as prior authorization assistance, program compliance, medication delivery, training in taking medications and drug affordability services in order for the patient’s care providers to optimize therapeutic and economic outcomes.
